West Coast Swing dance classes in Christchurch
Swing South Classes
West Coast Swing (WCS) is fun, relaxed and very social, which is reflected in the way we teach our classes – fun, relaxed and very social! We have a clear and simple format to ensure each lesson is easy to follow and understand, even for someone who has never danced before meaning you don’t need any previous dancing experience to learn WCS with us.
We rotate partners throughout the class so you don’t need to bring a dance partner. You’ll get to meet lots of new people during the class and you’re always welcome to bring friends and acquaintances along too!
We run Introduction to WCS classes every Tuesday evening. All of our classes are slightly different to help newcomers progressively learn the basic rhythms, techniques and patterns of WCS in a relaxed way. We aim to have everyone dancing to a full song by the end of their first lesson. No booking is required, you can come along for your first night at any time! Dates of upcoming workshops and other special events can be found on our calendar.
What you need:
Chances are you’ll get hot and thirsty at some point during the evening so we’d suggest a drink bottle of water, a spare (lightweight) shirt or top, and a sports towel.
Because WCS is a casual style of partner dancing, the main thing to consider in your ‘dresscode’, is comfort. This includes the comfort of the people you are dancing with. As an example, large metal buckles or clothes with sharp, scratchy bits may get in the way and inflict undesirable pain. Jeans and a tidy T-shirt will never go astray if you’re in a hurry.
Dance shoes are by no means essential and any shoe with a flexible sole, such as sneakers, will suffice. Women are the most likely to gain benefit from a proper pair of suede-soled dance shoes because they do most of the twisting and turning. WCS dance shoes will be available for purchase in class. Check out Dance Store Dance Shoes in Christchurch to see their full range of WCS dance shoes available.
